Emotional labour, emotional regulation strategies, and secondary traumatic stress: a cross-sectional study of allied mental health professionals in the UK

The present study investigates relations among emotional labour, regulation strategies, and secondary traumatic stress (STS) in a sample of allied mental health professionals (AMHPs) the UK. It empirically examines relationship between labour STS; and, explores moderational role strategies. Participants included 99 clinical psychologists, psychotherapists, counsellors, psychiatric social workers who completed an anonymous online questionnaire consisting items related to demographics, (surface acting deep acting), strategies (cognitive reappraisal expressive suppression), STS. Fifty-one percent participants reported high levels Data analysed using hierarchical multiple regression revealed that age, surface acting, suppression significantly predicted Deep STS only for those Cognitive did not moderate Limitations mainly relate its small size. contributes literature by highlighting AMHPs providing rationale future research on construct. In addition, it promotes development AMHPs’ personal capabilities professional resources ensure effective delivery services.
